Today My Baby Lost His Best Friend

Today was the saddest day of my baby’s life.

He lost his beloved pet, his hiking buddy, his most loyal friend.

He lost Tucker.

4/8/2008 ~ 6/10/2009

Tucker was around a year old when he came to live with us.Â He was a stray that showed up at the home of my parents in April of last year.Â So the day he came to live with us is the day I have listed above.

He so loved the woods and every day (except trash day) he was allowed to roam free in the woods.

Each evening and numerous times throughout the day he would come up to the front porch to sleep.

He knew where to come for love.

The forestry behind and surrounding our home was his playground.

. . .and that is where I found him today.

He was injured badly.

We have the sweetest country veterinarian who allowed My Christopher to hold him in his arms during his passing and to bring him home where we laid him to rest in a very small clearing in the forest.

He will always be in his “happy place”.

May you rest in peace Tucker.

Not So Innocent

Don’t get me wrong, I love my hound dog, I really do.

I know I complain about him a lot.

But he really needs a personality change.

It all started a couple weeks ago.Â Well actually it probably started a really long time ago and we just found out about it then.Â My Christopher, Cade and I were on a little spring break trip to Cincinnati.

We received a phone call from my older son Cory that when he arrived home from work that evening there was a business card placed on our door from Brad at the sheriffs department.Â That we need to call him during normal business hours regarding our dog.

Great, so we are out of state and our dog is making a ruckus while we are gone.

The next morning My Christopher calls Brad (whom is also a neighbor of ours).

Brad informs him that Tucker has been coming over to his back yard and barking his head off in the middle of the night waking everyone up.Â Not only this, but he has also been getting into other neighbors trash.

So now what are we going to do?

Of course My Christopher told Brad we would take care of things as soon as we were back home.

. . . . . . .and that he did.

Our crazy coon dog is now tied up on a 50ft lead every night and on trash days.

This has been going fairly well, occasionally we come home and find he’s wrapped himself around a tree but he’ll be sitting patiently waiting for us to come home from work in the mornings to let him off.

Then there was last night.

Last night I wanted to strangle my poor doggy.

It was raining, he was barking and it was 1am in the morning.

I went outside and found Tucker had managed to wrap his lead around the supports under the porch.Â So there I was getting completely covered in mud freeing my crazy dog so he would shut up and not freeze to death in the rain.

I go back to bed.

I am awakened again by my sweet loving dog barking his freaking head off.

It is now raining and snowing and around 30 degrees, not to mention 3 o’clock in the freaking morning.

This time he is wrapped around the tree and by the time I get out to him he is lying innocently on the walkway looking up at me with the saddest expression.Â How is it the dog only goes one way around the tree?Â Why can’t he go the other direction and unwrap himself?

Okay so he was so full of love for me unwrapping him that he was rubbing up against my legs with his drenched back and side, as if I wasn’t getting wet enough just being outside.

He slept on the porch and didn’t budge an inch the rest of the night.

. . . .as for me I shivered and tried warming back up for an hour, finally gave up then played on facebook for awhile.Â All the while listening to my youngest boy making weird noises and giggling in his sleep.

I think he was laughing at me.

First Hike of the Season

Earlier in the week we had our first spring-like day.Â A day that was definitely warm enough for us to adventure out into the woods.Â Cade loves hiking in the woods.Â It is one of his most favorite things to do on a warm day.

Aside from making funny faces which he does almost every day.

. . .or at least when my camera is out.

. . .and when I tell him to stop being silly ~ this is what I get.

Of course no hike can be complete without the company of our many small doggies.

We see trees that are quite strange in appearance.

With the help of our coondog we never ever get lost.

Obviously he didn’t burn off enough energy. . .so a little jump on the trampoline finished the job.

A Typical Morning

Cade is so much happier this year with school. I believe it’s because he’s matured so much over the summer. In 1st grade last year it was a constant battle to get homework done. He would cry over “too much homework”. Granted there seemed to be a lot of homework compared to what he’s had so far this year. Sometimes it would take us an hour and a half to complete it all, of course a lot of that was the pace at which we worked. This year I don’t think we’ve worked more than 45 minutes on any given night. He just seems happier and like he “just gets it”. Finally!! These photos are of Cade getting on the bus this morning. Mind you the Tucker situation has not changed, you will see.

My Dogs & Their Love/Hate Relationship With The School Bus

Dogs are funny. The extreme differences in their personalities is quite amusing and sometimes annoying though. For example:

This is our Tucker and he is afraid of the school bus. Â He runs circles around us as we’re trying to get up the driveway, then when he hears the bus coming really close he’ll jump back into the woods and watch from behind the trees. He runs through the woods up to where the road curves and jumps out into the road, stands there forgetting that she turns around and comes back. She then has to stop for him to get out of the road. I know she thinks he’s insane but she just shakes her head at him and drives on.

Abby on the other hand absolutely loves the

school bus. If I don’t leave her in the house when

it’s time for Cade to get on or off the bus she will

jump on and run to the back visiting every child

on the way. Then she’ll dart to the front and jump on the lap of the bus driver. This has occurred on more than one occasion and you should see what she does to the UPS truck.

Phoebe though is self-absorbed and doesn’t care about much.

Hunni is our princess ’nuff said.

Another Tree Down

Okay, the storms have got to stop. I don’t mind the little ones with a little rumble now and again and a light rain, but these monsoons we have been having with gusting winds (2 in 24 hours). I mean winds up to 70mph are just ridiculous according to my standards. Of course my standards may be a little biased, I don’t think we should ever have anything blowing near my house over 30mph. These are things you must worry about living in the forestry.

This is the third tree we’ve lost in storms since living Â here. It’s getting a little unsettling because the trees that are falling all around us just keep getting closer and closer. There’s one in my front yard that’s not even 20 feet from the house that is slowing dying from the inside so eventually it will either fall over or we will have to cut it down. They are so unpredictable, some of them last years standing tall with no new growth or greenery not even beginning to lean one way or another then all of a sudden you have a big gust and down she goes without a warning. Now mind you this tree is 50 feet tall and is not leaning in any direction at the moment, so who knows where she’ll end up. (All my trees are girls unless they have nuts growing on them, those are boys)

If you notice in the second photo Tucker and Abby are checking out our most recent victim. The storm that murdered this innocent tree was so fierce that Tucker was hiding out in the woods (obviously not the safest place to be). I stood on the front porch calling out for him, because the front porch is his home and it’s covered so he’s safe there. All of a sudden I see his head pop out from behind the murdered tree and the minute he heard me calling his name he dashed straight in through the front door. The funny part about that is that Tucker is strictly an outside dog. He’s only been inside 2 other times mainly because he’s usually very timid. He was an abandoned puppy that showed up at my parents and was seriously in need of food and social skills. He’s slowly getting more comfortable with people so it struck a funny note with me that he did not even hesitate to bolt right inside.

No More Training Wheels

Up until this past Monday we have left the training wheels on Cade’s bike. Learning to ride your bike in the country is a bit more treacherous than in the city as you don’t have smooth surfaces in which to learn on. I guess I didn’t realize that training wheels actually make it harder to ride in gravel or on our very lumpy yard. Riding became much easier with the training wheels gone as he can actually maneuver corners and curves. I’m sorry to say that I’m a bit overprotective when it comes to having my baby’s knees and legs cut up by the very sharp and pointy stones that we call gravel in our driveway.

Birthday Cookout

Last Sunday, July 13th was Cory’s birthday. Matter of fact we’ve had 4 birthdays in the recent weeks. My Mom’s and Dad’s were the 24th and 25th of June with Chris’ on July 8th and finally Cory’s last weekend. I decided it would be nice to have a cookout celebrating everyone all together. It wasn’t huge, but it was nice nonetheless. The following are photos of the day.

My Issues With This Hound Dog

Tucker is a Treeing Walker CoonHound. I believe that means he’s supposed to hunt for raccoons. This dog is slightly confused. For the past 3 days he has managed to find a turtle and bring it up on the porch, I really thought he had killed the poor thing. I found it Wednesday night when we came home from Cade’s baseball game. He likes to throw things up in the air which makes a ton of noise when whatever he’s throwing comes crashing down. So I picked the poor little guy up and saw that his shell was in pretty good shape and put him out on our deck/balcony where Tucker can’t get to him. I left him there and checked on him occasionally and thought that maybe he in fact was dead, but to my surprise this morning he had moved to the other end of the deck. I picked him up and took him out to the woods this morning to a safe place or so I thought. About a half hour later while cleaning the house I heard Tucker out playing on the front porch with one of his toys. The only problem with this is that I’m afraid he is going to be tossing something and it’s going to come crashing through the glass on the front door. Anyhow, I opened up the door to see what he was playing with and to my surprise he had managed to find the turtle again and was in the middle of having a toss fest with the poor guy again. At this point I’m really frustrated. I keep reminding him of the fact that he’s a coonhound and that he’s really supposed to be treeing coons. Needless to say I went on a very long walk down the road to a small creek and found the turtle a really safe place to be.

So the fact remains, in his mind he’s not really a coonhound but a find/kill/destroy hound. Almost every day he brings logs, not to be confused with sticks up to the porch and chews the bark off of said logs. Two weeks ago he brought a dead baby bird up and just yesterday he killed and brought us a dead baby possum. One day earlier in the week he found something dead and rotten and rolled all over it. Chris ended up giving him a bath and you would have thought he was killing him. I think he was as wet as Tucker when it was all over. So where do you take a dog for therapy? Because I seriously think he needs counseling.
