My Superstar!
I couldn’t believe it when my oldest son told me he needed money to enter a talent show a couple weeks ago.
I asked him what he was going to do.
He said he was going to play his guitar.
He’s never had a true guitar lesson in his life.
Most of his life he’s been a self-taught musician. He started playing around on the piano as a youngster. But he always played by ear. He’s one of those people who hears a song once and can play it back to you within just a few hours.
In elementary and jr. high school he was in his school band playing saxophone. When he first began his band career his director informed me that he was quite a talent and I should seek out private lessons for him. The school was quite small and he felt he needed to be “out there” a little more. So I took him to Depauw University and he had private instruction there. Matter of fact the instructor at the university would invite him on occasion to come play with them during some of their smaller concerts. He was 12 years old at the time.
His band career ended when he went to high school. He and the new band director just didn’t get along well. Though he continued to play just about any instrument he laid his hands on.
Including the guitar.
He searched on the internet until he found a youtube video somewhere that would teach him some basic guitar techniques.
Little did I know he would become so good. Awesome in fact. From a simple internet course.
He drew in the audience by talking candidly to them. Even talking directly to his older sister and telling her how happy he was she could make it. (She’s on leave from the military until today)
Beautifully.
