Under The Weather – Updated

My youngest male child came dragging up the driveway with not a lick of energy yesterday afternoon. He entered the front door and promptly threw himself onto the couch and burst into tears that he didn’t want homework. I took one look at his flushed face and felt his forehead. Hot it was. His temperature was over 102. After a dose of motrin and a half dozen checks with the thermometer (he likes to check himself) over the next 2 hours his temp was finally below 100.

This is my sickly child, the one that catches every cold, flu bug, virus, etc. under the sun, but has managed to remain relatively healthy for the past 2 years. It was a wonderful reprieve, but I feel it’s now over. We’re not even 2 months into the school year and he’s already catching the creepy crawley’s.

I’m actually quite disturbed that when I spoke to his bus driver about him not needing picked up this morning and mentioning the fact that he’s not a complainer so I’m sure the school personnel overlooked the fact that his cheeks are flushed and his eyes are watery and have that “sick” look, she informed me that he slept in his seat for the entire 50 minute ride home. Why didn’t someone call me to pick him up? I’m sure he had this fever most of the day as he told me that he wore his jacket in his classroom most of the day because he was freezing.

Luckily Motrin does wonders for this kid and he felt much better after only one dose, but said his throat felt funny. I looked with a flashlight. YUCK!! He had a non-raised red rash all over the back of his tongue and throat. I wondered just how awful the night would be for us as I’m sure that hurt like the dickens. Surprisingly he slept the entire night.

This morning his fever still remained below 100 so I thought we’d made it through this “illness” rather easily, by late morning though his throat began hurting again and his fever started climbing again. I took another look with the flashlight and SUPER YUCKY! There was red and white blisters all over his tongue and throat.

We made a trip to the doctor only to find out it was not in fact strep at all but must be something viral. So we just have to wait it out with a 2 day vacation from school. That made his day.

Thanks Dr. Butler. – if you’re reading this that is.

Update:
Our conversation from 5 minutes ago went like this:

Cade: mommy my throat still hurts
Me: hang on buddy, let me see if we have sore throat lozenges
I find them
Cade: ewwww do they taste like cough drops? (upon seeing the package that says Halls)
Me: no sweety they taste like berries
Cade: okay
He takes one
Cade: hmmmm, not too bad, do they say for hurting throats?
Me: yes sweety they do
Cade: will they help a lot?
Me: I’m not sure sweety, I hope so
Cade: well at least a half an inch?
